Peaches: A Sustainable Homestead Essential

(Prunus persica)

For homesteaders, permaculturists, and dedicated gardeners looking to enhance their food production, our bare-root peach trees offer an excellent opportunity to cultivate your own fruit supply. These deciduous trees provide delicious, nutritious fruit while contributing to landscape beauty and ecological diversity.

Our nursery offers a selection of peach cultivars known for their hardiness, disease resistance, and fruit quality. These trees typically reach heights of 15-20 feet with a similar spread, suitable for various garden sizes. Fragrant pink blossoms appear in early spring, followed by sweet fruit in late summer.

Growing Conditions and Care: Peach trees thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. They prefer well-drained, fertile, loamy soil that is slightly acidic. Consistent moisture is important, especially during fruit development.

Common challenges include peach leaf curl, brown rot, and peach tree borers. Implementing integrated pest management strategies can help maintain tree health and fruit quality.

Hardiness and Pollination: Our peach varieties are suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5-9, with some cultivars showing better cold tolerance. Most peach trees are self-fruitful, but cross-pollination between different varieties can improve fruit set and quality.

Why Choose Humble Abode Nursery: Our bare-root peach trees are grown using sustainable practices that prioritize soil health and biodiversity. We ship trees during their dormant season to ensure optimal transplanting success. Each tree is carefully inspected before shipping to guarantee you receive a healthy, vigorous specimen.

Our experienced staff can provide guidance on variety selection, planting techniques, and ongoing care. We’re committed to supporting your journey in sustainable food production and are always available to answer questions as your trees mature.

By choosing our bare-root peach trees, you’re investing in a long-term source of nutritious food, enhancing your landscape’s biodiversity, and taking a significant step towards greater self-sufficiency.

Variety Info:

  • Mixed Variety Seedling—Seedling peaches give great fruit! There is some variability, of course, but generally they are quite good, I often can’t tell the difference in taste between them and named varieties, so they’re a great economical option
  • ‘Reliance’— Considered one of the hardiest peaches, certainly among the most popular for northern growers. Precocious and often bears heavy crops.
  • ‘Contender’—A late blooming peach with yellow flesh, freestone. Also one of the hardiest varieties available. Reliable cropper because of the late bloom time.
  • ‘Madison’—One of the best peaches for the north, blooms show great frost-tolerance and it is consistency productive. Freestone.
  • ‘Red Haven’—Hardy, self-fertile (like many peaches), and precocious. The gold standard of peaches.
  • Siberian C Seedling—Super cold hardy, does well down to zone 4. Smaller fruited, later ripening, and a naturally compact size tree. Tasty peaches that thrive where others won’t.

Growing notes:
— The lifespan of a peach tree grown here is not that long, usually going into decline after a decade or so of fruiting, so it’s important to keep planting them every so often.

Shipping restrictions: Cannot be shipped to California and Washington.
