Pears: A Fruitful Investment for Sustainable Gardens

(Pyrus communis)

Pear trees are an excellent choice for homesteaders, permaculturists, and gardeners seeking to diversify their fruit production. These long-lived, low-maintenance trees offer delicious fruit and attractive foliage, making them a valuable addition to any sustainable landscape.

Our nursery offers a selection of European Pear varieties, each chosen for its hardiness, disease resistance, and fruit quality. Pear trees typically grow to 25-30 feet tall, with some dwarf varieties remaining more compact. Their white spring blossoms give way to fruit that ripens from late summer through fall, depending on the variety.

Growing Conditions and Care: Pear trees thrive in full sun and prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.0-6.5. They are more tolerant of heavy soils than many fruit trees but still benefit from good drainage. Once established, pears are relatively drought-tolerant.

Pruning is crucial for maintaining tree health and fruit production. We recommend a central leader system for most pear varieties, which promotes a strong structure and easy harvesting.

Pears are generally less susceptible to pests and diseases than some other fruit trees. However, fire blight can be a concern. Choosing resistant varieties and maintaining good orchard hygiene are key preventive measures.

Hardiness and Pollination: Our pear varieties are suitable for USDA hardiness zones 4-9, with some cultivars showing exceptional cold hardiness. Most pears require cross-pollination from a different variety to produce fruit, so we recommend planting at least two compatible varieties.

Our bare-root pear trees are grown using sustainable practices that promote robust root systems and overall tree health. We ship during the dormant season to ensure successful transplanting. Each tree undergoes thorough inspection before shipping to guarantee quality.

By choosing our bare-root pear trees, you’re investing in a long-term source of fruit that will contribute to your homestead’s productivity and beauty for decades to come.

Variety Info:

  • Bartlett—Unlike apples, the varieties of pears you find in the grocery store are actually well-suited for home growers. Bartlett is a vigorous, easy to grow pear that gives excellent fruit.
  • Seckel— One of the very best desert pears, super sweet, juicy and aromatic. It’s an old heirloom variety from the 1700’s that has been appreciated by pear-lovers for generations. It is a very fireblight resistant variety as well. It’s a superstar variety, still one of the best centuries later.
  • Patten—Very hardy (to zone 3) dessert pear. Scab resistant. Large fruit with a red blush. Creamy flesh with superior flavor that gets even better in storage.
  • Red D’Anjou— A stunning red version of the D’anjou pear. Juicy, dense flesh. An all-purpose, delicious pear.
  • Luscious—Similar to Bartlett in many ways but with some major advantages— it’s hardier (zone 4a, probably worth trying in zone 3 also), sweeter, and is a more fireblight resistant tree.
  • Maxie—this is a really interesting variety, a cross between the Asian pear ‘Nijisseiki’ and the European pear ‘Red Bartlett,’ it produces a round, crispy, and juicy fruit with complex flavor. It can be enjoyed at different stages of ripeness and has some scab resistance as well.
  • Comice—This old French variety of pear is one of the sweetest, with a mellow flavor and creamy, fine-grained texture, prized by pear connoisseurs.
  • Moonglow—A vigorous and productive variety bred specifically for its fireblight resistance. A large beautiful pear that is a great choice for the home orchard.
