Quince: The Forgotten Fruit of Fragrance and Flavor

(Cydonia oblonga)

Ready to rediscover a fruit that’s been cherished for centuries? Meet the quince, a unique and aromatic addition to any homestead orchard!

Imagine a fruit with the shape of an apple, the aroma of tropical flowers, and a flavor that transforms from tart to sweet with cooking. That’s the magic of quince! Quince becomes a culinary delight when cooked, perfect for jellies, preserves, and traditional desserts. Some varieties can be eaten fresh as well.

Quince trees are a beautiful sight in any garden. Their large, soft green leaves and pale pink blossoms in spring create a romantic, old-world charm. The golden fruits in fall are not only delicious but also wonderfully fragrant, perfuming your entire garden.

Growing Conditions and Care:
Growing quince is surprisingly easy. These trees are adaptable and relatively low-maintenance. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Quince trees are naturally compact, making them ideal for smaller spaces.

Quince trees thrive in USDA hardiness zones 4/5-9. They’re self-fruitful, meaning you only need one tree for a good harvest. However, they do benefit from a pollination partner as well.

At Humble Abode Nursery, our bare-root quince trees are carefully selected for disease resistance and productivity. We offer varieties known for their excellent flavor and aromatic qualities.

Why choose our quince? We grow our trees using sustainable practices, focusing on soil health and natural pest management. This means you get robust trees that establish quickly and produce abundantly.

Ready to add some old-world charm to your homestead? Plant a quince tree and discover the fragrant, flavorful world of this forgotten fruit!

  • Aromatnaya: This Russian variety is sweet enough to eat fresh from the tree! Pineappley flavor and a disease resistant vigorous tree. I’m a huge fan of this variety.
  • Kaunching: Huge, bright yellow fruit, also sweet enough for fresh eating. A popular variety in orchards throughout Central Asia.
  • Tekkes: A Turkish variety with attractive fruit and juicy crisp non-astringent flesh.
  • Ekmek: A Turkish variety with yellow pear-shaped fruit. Rated highly for disease resistance and flavorful fruit.
  • Pineapple Quince: This classic variety is named for its tropical aroma — the fruit has a bright, tangy-sweet flavor that hints at pineapple when cooked. It’s firm, fragrant, and perfect for jams, jellies, and poaching.

  • Krimskaya Quince: A cold-hardy, Ukrainian variety that stands out for its softer texture and delicate, pear-like flavor even when raw.
