Ready to add a true legend to your landscape? Let’s talk about chestnuts (Castanea spp.) – those magnificent trees that offer a perfect blend of beauty, productivity, and nutrition.
Here at Humble Abode Nursery, we’re absolutely smitten with chestnuts, and for good reason! These stately trees grow into impressive specimens, reaching heights of 40-60 feet with broad, spreading canopies that provide dappled shade in summer.Â
Chestnuts aren’t just about romance and roasting; they’re practical powerhouses for your homestead or garden. These long-lived trees can produce nuts for generations, making them a fantastic investment in food security. Their high carbohydrate nutritional profile is inspiring many to plant chestnuts as a perennial staple food. Plus, their strong, rot-resistant wood is prized for lumber and crafts – talk about multi-purpose!
Growing chestnuts is easier than you might think. They thrive in full sun and prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil. They do not like poorly drained soil. Once established, they’re relatively drought-tolerant and low-maintenance.
Chestnuts are generally hardy in USDA zones 4-9, depending on the specific variety. Plant 2 or more for cross-pollination.
Why choose Humble Abode Nursery’s chestnuts? We take pride in offering bare-root trees that are carefully selected for vigor and health. Our sustainable growing practices ensure you’re getting top-quality stock that’s ready to thrive in your landscape from day one. Plus, we offer a variety of chestnut species and hybrids, so you can find the perfect fit for your climate and goals.
Ready to embrace the chestnut legacy? Add these majestic trees to your cart today and take a big step towards food security, landscape beauty, and nutty deliciousness. Your future self (and future generations) will thank you!

We grow chestnut seedlings, and not grafted clones. This is often preferred to avoid delayed graft failure which can be a problem. It also just makes a tougher tree, especially in our climate, and seedlings give excellent nuts. While seedlings won’t be clones of their parents, they will likely carry some of their excellent traits.
