Medlar (Mespilus germanica)

A forgotten fruit with ancient charm—Medlar brings a touch of old-world wonder and slow-ripening magic to the modern home orchard.

Medlar has a unique, spiced flavor and a story that reaches back over a thousand years. Once beloved in medieval Europe and featured in the writings of Chaucer and Shakespeare, Mespilus germanica is now making a quiet comeback among permaculture gardeners, heritage orchardists, and folks who appreciate fruit with character.

Edible & Medicinal Uses

Medlar doesn’t behave like your typical apple or pear. Its small, russeted fruits are picked hard in late fall and then left to blett—that is, soften and sweeten off the tree, usually in a cool spot for a few weeks. Once bletted, the flesh turns soft, caramel-brown, and lusciously spreadable, with a flavor somewhere between baked apple, spiced pear, and date. Earthy sweetness with hints of cinnamon and wine.

Growing Medlar

Medlar is wonderfully suited to small-scale home orchards. It stays compact—usually 8 to 12 feet tall—and can even be grown as a large shrub or espaliered against a wall. It thrives in USDA Zones 5–8 and prefers full sun and well-drained soil, though it can tolerate heavier clay than many other fruit trees.

Unlike more finicky pome fruits, medlar is relatively low-maintenance. It has good natural disease resistance and rarely demands spraying. It blooms later (usually after the danger of frost), but still manages to ripen fruit before deep winter sets in.

You’ll only need one tree—medlar is self-fertile. And because it’s so compact and ornamental (with large, leathery leaves and striking late-spring blossoms), it’s a natural fit for edible landscaping, cottage gardens, or small permaculture plots.

Why We Grow It

At Humble Abode Nursery, we love the misfits. The oddballs. The slow, steady plants that have quietly fed people for generations. Medlar fits right in. It’s not just a fruit—it’s a conversation starter, a link to the past, and a delicious reminder that some things are worth the wait.

If you’re building a food forest or backyard orchard and want a cold-hardy fruit tree that isn’t another apple, medlar is your friend. It stands alone in both flavor and character, and it belongs in every garden that values diversity, resilience, and heritage.

Varieties

  • Puciu Mol—An Italian variety known for its smaller fruit and intense, spiced flavor — rich and almost fig-like when fully bletted. It tends to ripen earlier than other types, making it great for extending your harvest season.
  • Super Mol—This vigorous selection offers slightly larger fruit than Puciu Mol, with a smoother, milder flavor and creamy texture when soft.
  • Breda Giant—A Dutch cultivar prized for its cold-hardiness and large, firm fruit with a subtle tartness that balances its sweetness.
  • Sultan—Another large-fruited Dutch variety, with great flavor and fine texture when fully ripe.
