Growing 60-80 feet tall with a spread of 40-50 feet, the Kentucky Coffeetree features a rugged, angular branching structure that creates striking winter interest. Its large, bipinnately compound leaves provide dappled shade in summer and turn yellow in fall.

This tree thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a wide range of soil conditions, including clay and urban environments. It’s hardy in USDA zones 3-8 and is notably resistant to drought, air pollution, and salt spray.

The name “coffeetree” comes from early settlers who roasted and ground the dried seeds as a coffee substitute, though they’re not related to true coffee. The tree’s large, woody pods add visual interest and can persist through winter. The unripe seeds can be cooked and eaten a bit like fava beans.

Kentucky Coffeetree is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are on separate trees. Only female trees produce pods, so consider this when selecting trees for your landscape. The flowers, while not showy, are attractive to pollinators.
