Seaberry (Hippophae rhamnoides), is a hardy shrub that combines ornamental beauty with nutritious fruit production. Also known as sea buckthorn, this versatile plant is an excellent addition to any garden or landscape.
Native to Europe and Asia, seaberry thrives in various climates and soil types. Its silver-green foliage provides a striking contrast in your garden, while the vibrant orange berries offer a bountiful harvest rich in vitamins and antioxidants. The flavor or a seaberry is a rare tropical treat for Northern gardens—a mix of pineapple and citrus that is completely unique and delicious.
Seaberry plants flourish in full sun exposure and well-drained soil. They’re remarkably adaptable, thriving in USDA hardiness zones 3-8 and withstanding temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C). Contrary to most descriptions of seaberry you’ll find online, I find that seaberry does not thrive in poor, droughty soils. For me, they prefer moist humus-y garden soil, like most other plants I grow.
To ensure fruit production, plant both male and female plants, with one male for every 5-7 females. Space plants 6-8 feet apart to allow for proper growth. While seaberry is low-maintenance, follow these care tips for optimal results:
With its combination of beauty, resilience, and nutritious fruit, seaberry is an excellent investment for any garden. Plant these hardy shrubs today and enjoy years of low-maintenance beauty and bountiful harvests.
