Heartnut—An Productive, Beautiful, and Easy to Crack Nut
(Juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis), also known as Japanese Walnut, is a fast-growing deciduous tree prized for its uniquely shaped, sweet nuts. At Humble Abode Nursery, we offer seedlings from cultivar parents of this unique tree.Â
Heartnuts typically grow 40-60 feet tall with a broad, rounded crown. They feature large compound leaves that provide dappled shade. The nuts are encased in a thin husk and have a distinctive heart shape when cracked, hence the name. Unfortunately seedlings will not all have this heart shape, and some will revert back to the round Japanese Walnut shape.
These trees prefer full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. They’re hardy in USDA zones 4-8 and are more cold-tolerant than Persian walnuts. While they may be partially self-fertile, it’s recommended to plant at least 2 for pollination.
Compared to other walnuts, heartnuts are easier to crack and have a milder, sweeter flavor. The nuts are rich in healthy fats, protein, and minerals, making them a nutritious addition to the diet.
Our bare-root heartnut trees are are the progeny of high-quality cultivars that have been selected for nut quality and adaptability to various growing conditions.
By incorporating heartnuts into your landscape, you’re adding a productive, long-lived tree that offers both food and ornamental value. Whether you’re expanding your home orchard, creating a food forest, or simply looking for an interesting shade tree with edible benefits, heartnuts are a unique and rewarding choice.
Note: due to state restrictions, walnuts cannot be shipped to AZ, CA, KS, TX.
