False Indigo (Amorpha fruticosa): Native Nitrogen-Fixing Shrub

False indigo, also known as indigo bush, is a hardy, deciduous shrub native to North America. Valued for its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, attractive flowers, and wildlife benefits, this plant is an excellent addition to permaculture systems and native plant gardens.

Growing 6-10 feet tall and wide, false indigo has compound leaves that give it a feathery appearance. In late spring to early summer, it produces striking spikes of deep purple flowers, followed by small seed pods.

It shines as a tough, manageable, easy to grow companion plant in fruit tree guilds. As a nitrogen fixer, it can be chopped and dropped to add fertility and create a mulch.

While not typically used for human consumption, false indigo plays important ecological roles. Its flowers attract pollinators, and the plant serves as a larval host for several butterfly species. As a nitrogen-fixer, it improves soil fertility for nearby plants.

False indigo thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts to various soil types, including poor or sandy soils. It’s hardy in USDA zones 4-9 and is notably drought-tolerant once established.

Consider adding false indigo to your landscape if you’re interested in native plants, looking for nitrogen-fixing shrubs, or want to support local wildlife and pollinators.
