Almond (Prunus dulcis)

If you’ve ever dreamed of harvesting your own almonds but assumed they were just for California growers, here’s some good news: hardy almonds make it possible for cold-climate gardeners to grow this nourishing nut tree with success. These are selections of Prunus dulcis that have been bred or selected for their improved cold tolerance and later bloom—perfect for folks gardening in Zones 5–8.

Growing Almond

Hardy almonds are most successful in areas with full sun, well-drained soil, and moderate humidity. They thrive in USDA Zones 5–8, but keep in mind that late spring frosts can still damage blossoms in colder microclimates—so site them with care. A north-facing slope (so they wake up slightly later in the spring or the sheltered edge of a building can offer some added protection.

These trees are similar in size and care to a small peach tree—typically growing 12 to 15 feet tall, with a slightly spreading canopy. In early spring, before the leaves appear, they burst into a show of fragrant pale pink blossoms that rival any ornamental cherry or plum. Bees love them.

Most hardy almonds are partially self-fertile but produce much better with a second variety nearby for cross-pollination. Be sure to plant at least two genetically distinct trees for best yields.

Good drainage is key—wet roots for an extended period of time are a dealbreaker.
