(Xanthoceras sorbifolium)
Yellowhorn, also known as shiny-leaf yellowhorn or Chinese flowering chestnut, is a unique small tree or large shrub native to northern China. This lesser-known species offers both ornamental value and edible nuts, making it an intriguing addition to diverse landscapes.
Growing to 15-25 feet tall, yellowhorn features compound leaves with serrated leaflets, giving it an appearance similar to mountain ash. In late spring, it produces showy racemes of white flowers with yellow and red centers, which are highly attractive to pollinators. The flowers are followed by large, woody capsules containing edible seeds reminiscent of macadamia nuts.
Yellowhorn prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It’s hardy in USDA zones 4-7 and is notably drought-tolerant once established. The tree is relatively slow-growing but long-lived, with a potential lifespan of over 100 years.
One of yellowhorn’s key advantages is its combination of ornamental beauty and edible yield. The nuts are rich in protein and oil, and can be eaten raw or roasted. The tree also has potential as a sustainable source of biofuel. At Humble Abode Nursery, we offer bare-root yellowhorn seedlings propagated from hardy, productive stock. Our plants are grown using sustainable practices to ensure healthy, adaptable specimens.
We cultivate yellowhorn as part of our commitment to introducing diverse, multi-functional trees to temperate climates. This species represents an opportunity to explore unusual edible landscaping while adding spring beauty to your garden.
Consider adding yellowhorn to your property if you’re interested in uncommon nut trees, looking for spring-flowering ornamentals, or want to diversify your edible landscape with hardy, drought-tolerant species.
