Asian Pears: The Perfect Blend of Crunch and Sweetness for Your Edible Landscape

Discover the delightful world of Asian Pears (Pyrus pyrifolia), a must-have addition to any homestead, permaculture project, or backyard orchard. These unique fruits offer the best of both worlds – the satisfying crunch of an apple combined with the sweet, juicy flavors of a pear. Asian Pears are sure to become a favorite in your edible landscape.

Asian Pears are early to bear fruit and continue to bear generously throughout their lives. When you bite into one, you’ll experience an explosion of crisp, refreshing juice with a subtle floral aroma. These versatile fruits are perfect for fresh eating, adding to salads, or incorporating into your favorite desserts. They also store well, allowing you to enjoy their unique flavor long after harvest.

Growing Asian Pears is a rewarding experience that doesn’t require expert-level skills. These trees thrive in full sun and prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil. They’re adaptable to various soil types.

When it comes to care, Asian Pears benefit from annual pruning to promote good air circulation and sunlight penetration. This helps prevent diseases and ensures even ripening of the fruit. Thin the fruit clusters in early summer to encourage larger, higher-quality pears and prevent branch breakage under the weight of a heavy crop.

Asian Pears are generally hardy in USDA zones 5-9 (down to zone 4 in some cases), making them suitable for a wide range of climates across North America. While some varieties are partially self-fertile, planting two or more different cultivars will result in better pollination and more abundant harvests. Cross-pollination between Asian Pears and European Pears is also possible, offering exciting opportunities for orchard diversity.

By choosing our bare-root Asian Pear trees, you’re investing in years of bountiful harvests and the joy of watching your own fruit trees grow. Whether you’re looking to enhance your food forest, create a beautiful edible landscape, or simply enjoy the unmatched taste of homegrown fruit, Asian Pears are an excellent choice.

Variety Info:

  • Hosoi— Super juicy fruit with a complex delicious flavor. Beautiful large round speckled fruit. Tree has an ornamental spreading form. Stores for about a month.
  • Shinsoi—Very crisp and aromatic fruit. Sublime flavor. Moderate resistance to fireblight. Very upright growth—consider spreading limbs to train branches at a wider angle.
  • Shinko—Another great fireblight resistant variety. Large fruit, stores for around 3 months. Heavy bearing. Fruits should be thinned to avoid overcropping and breaking branches!
  • Yoinashi—This variety has excellent fireblight resistance. It’s also one of the best tasting varieties I’ve had. Really complex and very sweet butterscotchy flavor.
  • Korean Giant— also known as Olympic or Dan Bae. This is one of the best varieties for storing. They can keep into late winter/early spring. It has large fruits and it’s a vigorous grower. A winner for sure.

Note: I use Pyrus betulifolia as a rootstock, which has been demonstrated to have excellent compatibility as well as increase fruit size.
