Hazelnut: A Productive Nut Tree for Home Orchards

Hazelnuts (Corylus spp.) are deciduous shrubs prized for their delicious, nutrient-dense nuts. At Humble Abode Nursery, we offer selected seedlings from parents known for disease resistance and productivity.

These multi-stemmed plants typically grow up to about 10 feet tall, featuring broad, heart-shaped leaves. In late winter, they produce distinctive catkins followed by clusters of nuts enclosed in frilly husks.

Hazelnuts thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil. They’re hardy in USDA zones 4-9, some down to zone 3. Plant at least 2, (ideally more) for pollination.

These plants are relatively low-maintenance once established. They’re drought-tolerant and resistant to many pests, though Eastern Filbert Blight can be a concern in some regions. Our offerings include resistant varieties to address this issue.
