Juneberry: The Prairie’s Sweet Secret

(Amelanchier alnifolia)

Ready to discover a berry that’s been cherished by North Americans for centuries? Meet the Juneberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), also known as Serviceberry or Saskatoon. Juneberries are native in the Western US and throughout Canada. It grows around 8-15′ tall, depending on variety, making it an easy to manage and harvest berry shrub.

Imagine biting into a berry that tastes like a blend of blueberry, cherry, and almond. That’s the unique flavor of Juneberries. These nutrient-packed berries are perfect fresh, in pies, or dried like raisins.

Saskatoon bushes aren’t just about the fruit. In spring, they’re covered in delicate fragrant white blossoms, creating a stunning display. Their oval leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and red in fall, adding seasonal interest to your landscape.

Growing Saskatoons is a breeze for gardeners of all levels. These hardy shrubs thrive in full sun to partial shade and adapt to various soil types. They’re drought-tolerant once established and require minimal pruning, making them ideal for low-maintenance edible landscapes.

Saskatoons are incredibly cold-hardy, suitable for USDA zones 2-7. They’re partially self-fertile, but planting multiple bushes can increase yield.

At Humble Abode Nursery, our bare-root Saskatoon plants are carefully selected for fruit quality and productivity. We offer varieties known for their excellent flavor and reliable yields.

Why choose our Saskatoons? We’re passionate about promoting native plants that support local ecosystems. Our sustainable growing practices ensure you receive healthy, vigorous plants ready to thrive in your garden.
